Members of the Gas Association of NZ and the Liquefied Petroleum Gas Association (LPGA) have voted to merge their respective organisations into one entity - GasNZ. Established in 1909 and 1977 respectively, the organisations have been supporting the gas sector for well over a century.

“Today, with new gas fuels being developed, renewable gases and low carbon gases are a key part of our future energy system and integral to a sustainable future; the merger supports this new future for gas ” says GasNZ Chief Executive Janet Carson.

The organisations united last year under a GasNZ brand and strategy, squarely focused on maximising the role gas plays in delivering a net zero carbon future for New Zealand, and providing a single and consistent voice for all gas fuels (LPG, natural gas, renewable gases, and hydrogen gas).

“The vote taken on 26th January completes this change.

“Mergers had been suggested previously but failed. Potentially there was a tendency for companies to be singular fuel focussed, however today our members businesses have interests in all gas fuel aspects, and members are enthusiastic about bringing more renewable gas and hydrogen gas members into our hāpori [community]” Carson said.

The new organisation will take effect on 1 April 2023.
