Recent natural disasters in New Zealand and around the world have underscored the significance of LPG in times of crisis.

Cyclone Gabrielle caused widespread power outages in Te Tairawhiti and Hawkes Bay, leaving many without electricity for an extended period of time. In response, the LPG sector offered support by donating 9kg LPG bottles, portable gas cookers, and butane canisters to the most remote parts of the region.

The importance of LPG in crisis situations was also evident in Turkey following the earthquake on 6 February. The increased demand for LPG in the affected areas led to a global appeal for LPG equipment.

In a letter to the World LPG Association, the Chairman of the Turkish LPG Association, Mr. Eyup Aratay, wrote, "We lack especially cylinder heating and cooking equipment to support victims. We are appealing to you to ask for your help in providing these equipment...With your support, we can help prevent people from freezing in the cold and bring some hope and comfort to those who have lost so much."

Janet Carson, Chief Executive of GasNZ, acknowledges the essential role LPG plays.

" The disasters we are currently enduring are a reminder of that.

“LPG is a versatile, portable, safe, and reliable source of energy for cooking, heating, and lighting. In disaster situations, it can provide a much-needed source of energy when other sources are unavailable or disrupted.

“The LPG sector has demonstrated its commitment to providing support during crisis situations, and the global community has shown its willingness to assist those in need,” she says.
