Ever hopeful of summer, barbecues drive 9kg LPG sales

4 February 2026

While it hasn’t been the best of summers so far in many parts of New Zealand, expectations were certainly high for the barbecue season leading up to New Year.

Elgas NZ reported selling more than 37,000 Swap’n’Go LPG cylinders in the final week of 2025, a clear sign that Kiwis were looking forward to the summer BBQ season with enthusiasm.

And as more consistently fine weather settles in for February, Elgas also advises that as families and friends fire up their grills, it’s essential to ensure LPG cylinders are used safely so everyone can enjoy gatherings with confidence.

To start, customers should always transport cylinders upright and secure them in the vehicle to prevent tipping.

Once home, check that the cylinder has a tight, undamaged rubber O‑ring and that the connection point on the BBQ is clean and free from debris.

When attaching the cylinder, hand‑tighten the connection firmly and perform a quick soapy water leak test—bubbles indicate a leak that needs attention before use.

BBQs should only be operated outdoors in well‑ventilated areas, away from walls, overhangs and anything flammable. Keep the cylinder positioned beside the BBQ, never underneath it.

During cooking, stay close and never leave the grill unattended, especially around children or pets.

When finished, turn off the cylinder valve first, then the BBQ controls. This helps avoid trapped gas in the hose.
