Member Spotlight: Firstgas deploys innovative tech for pipeline integrity

GasNZ acknowledges the work of member Firstgas in successfully undertaking a complex repair project on the Maui pipeline using BISEP technology, the first time this specialist isolation tool has been used in New Zealand.

The BISEP seals off a section of pipeline from the inside, creating a secure barrier so work can be completed safely and efficiently, with the gas still flowing. Once installed, it forms a double seal that is continuously monitored before any cutting or welding begins. 

Repairing without stopping gas flow increases network reliability, reduces emissions associated with maintenance activities, and enhances safety for workers.

These projects demonstrate the significant planning, engineering expertise and long-term investment required to maintain critical energy infrastructure and support secure, reliable energy supply for New Zealanders.
