H2X – Bringing decades of oil and gas experience to hydrogen
New GasNZ member H2X, established in late 2019, is a New Plymouth based company using decades of technical experience in the oil and gas industry to provide bespoke solutions for the manufacture, transport, and storage of hydrogen.
H2X has a small internal team of four co-directors with significant experience in the energy industry. Through its parent company Total Instrument Systems (TIS), H2X has access to forty staff skilled in helping clients integrate the benefits of green hydrogen with existing energy infrastructure.
H2X Director Tom Wiseman says green hydrogen is a perfect candidate for the transition from fossil fuels.
“Green hydrogen is produced using renewable electricity, which makes it a zero-carbon energy source.
“Once manufactured, green hydrogen can be used as a fuel for hydrogen vehicles, for off-grid electricity generation, or to supplement renewable natural gas production.”
Wiseman says H2X is excited to be part of the rapidly growing hydrogen sector in New Zealand.
“Overseas knowledge and use of hydrogen is growing, and H2X is drawing on that knowledge alongside our own experience to help bring about the hydrogen switch in New Zealand.
“We also know it’s not an individual effort, and we’re excited to work collaboratively with other businesses, authorities, and organisations like GasNZ to develop, test, and commercialise low-emissions energy.”
Wiseman says just as existing gas infrastructure is transferable to carbon-neutral solutions such as hydrogen, the same age-old skills used in the industry also remain applicable.
“Part of our mission as H2X is to support the continuation of oil and gas industry skills in new energy applications. We want to ensure young talent is encouraged through to secure careers in an industry ready for the future.”
