Cyclone Gabrielle has left a path of heavy destruction though Northland, Auckland, and down to Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay. About 45,000 homes were initially without power as a result of the cyclone.

LPG is playing an immediate and vital role as a versatile, mobile fuel for cooking and water heating, and will continue to do so in the recovery ahead.

New Zealand’s LPG wholesalers - Genesis, Elgas, Rockgas and Ongas - are doing an incredible job getting LPG to customers in the far corners of the East Coast and Hawke’s Bay, says Janet Carson Chief Executive of GasNZ.

“There have been some challenges for sure, but deliveries have continued.

“A number of roads have been inaccessible, and our companies have also had to focus at the same time on ensuring their staff are safe and accounted for, as well as checking the condition of their gas facilities.

“Without a doubt when the power’s out, LPG availability is critical,” she said.

There has been a surge in demand for LPG and bottles. Last week, Parris Greening, General Manager of the Mana Ahururi Trust told Stuff ‘We have no power. People's gas bottles are running out. People are desperate for kai’.

The LPG sector responded quickly to their circumstances with Rockgas donating 9kg cylinders, filled with LPG, to the Trust immediately.

“LPG will continue to be vital in the aftermath, and further donations of LPG and equipment are being made this week, with more expected in the weeks ahead,” Janet said.
